My husband and I recently created an area in our backyard specifically for our son's outdoor play house, water table, and tool bench. Our aim was to keep them free of mud and off the lawn to make mowing easier.

Our first step was delineating the area with edging. We chose the no-dig kind which is placed right on top of the lawn. The one Lowe's had looked like a plastic tub with small holed tabs running along one side but there are lots of choices. The package comes with plastic stakes that get hammered into the holes on the tab directly into your lawn holding the edging in place.

Once the edging was laid and the tabs staked to the ground we had two choices: we could dig up the grass on the inside of the area or keep it and possibly deal with weeds. We wanted to keep the project as simple as possible so we didn't dig up the grass but instead laid down garden fabric to keep weeds from sprouting up. Then we filled in the entire space, right up to the edging, with pea gravel. You could also use mulch if you don't like the look of the pea gravel. To cover the entire area, required 25 bags, each weighing about 50 pounds...about twelve times as much as our initial estimate. It says on the bag how much each area each bag will cover so if you lay out the area first and measure you'll know how many bags you'll need. Our last step was watering down the gravel to get rid of the grit. Now the toys are in place and our toddler is thrilled to have his very own play space and we feel like we're on the road to a backyard fit for entertaining.

If you have a backyard playset be sure to check out Good Housekeeping's article on how to keep your kids safe while playing on it.
